76.1 - Invited Paper: Can MicroLED Beat OLED? (3:10 PM - 3:30 PM)
  • Eric Virey, Zine Bouhamri, Raphael Mermet-Lyaudoz
    Yole Intelligence Lyon France

  • As a self-emissive technology, microLEDs retain all the benefits of OLEDs and should be able to improve on many aspects, but will this be enough to guarantee success? As microLED technology keeps getting delayed and OLED technology keeps improving, the value proposition for microLEDs is shrinking. This paper will look at how microLED could deliver stronger differentiation.

76.2 - Invited Paper: New Architectures for Multifunctional Displays (3:30 PM - 3:50 PM)
  • François Templier, Michaël Pelissier
CEA-Leti, Univ. Grenoble Alpes Grenoble France

  • There is a growing interest in displays with additional functions. The authors propose new microLED display architectures embedding Vis/NIR/SWIR emission/sensing. In the first, addressing full-screen fingerprint application, there is no compromise between sensor performance and display brightness. In the second, suited to near-field touchless displays, the system is drastically simplified.

  • Integrating sensors into displays can add value to products, reduce overall BOM costs, and improve performance. More natural and effortless interactions between humans and machines are expected in future. Several sensing architectures, levels of integration, and a demonstration of CMOS microIC circuits for a touch-sensing application will be presented.

76.4 - Implementing a Photo-Detectable AM-LED Display Using Discrete ICs (4:10 PM - 4:30 PM)
  • Yu-Seong Joung, Won-Been Jeong, Seung-Woo Lee
Kyung Hee University Seoul South Korea

  • Myeong-Jin Ko, Jong-In Kim, Hyun-Sun Park, Jung-Hyun Kim
Korea Photonics Technology Institute Gwangju South Korea

  • An AMLED display featuring photodetection is implemented by using discrete ICs. For pixel driving, a PDIC (pixel driving IC) is presented. The size of the PDIC is 400 × 800  µm2. For photosensing, a charge integrator is used. For both emitting and sensing LEDs, the proposed circuit comprises PDIC, switches, CI, and control signals. It is verified that the implemented AMLED display can distinguish photocurrents caused by the reflected lights from the colored objects depending on the color combinations of emitting and sensing LEDs.

  • With the advent of µLED displays, multiple paradigm shifts in the overall system architecture will offer new opportunities and dramatically change the requirements of display management and general sensing. This work focuses on the required system architecture of a microLED display with embedded sensing functionality. The boundary conditions and constraints on the system design are outlined and conclusions on potential functional implementations are drawn.
